I am a downtown resident whose primary mode of transportation is the bicycle. Although I grew up in Hamilton, I adopted urban cycling in Montreal. Although I was terrified the first time I rode a bicycle in traffic as a young adult, Montreal's highly-developed cycling infrastructure has normalized cycling as a viable, clean efficient + healthful mode of transit. This had a direct effect on my behaviour, encouraging me - who considered myself to be somewhat timid + unathletic - to try it out. Now, several years later, I am a devoted urban cyclist who is incredibly thankful that I have discovered this fitness building, economical way to travel through my city.
My own experience has demonstrated the importance of safe cycling infrastructure in building ridership. A safe, dedicated east-west cycling corridor in Hamilton could be a gamechanger in terms of supporting a cycling culture, in which thousands or tens of thousands of Hamiltonians, not just traffic-dodging "road warriors," could enjoy the economic, environmental + health benefits of incorporating cycling into their daily routines. Therefore, I urge Council to take action and provide dedicated, 2-Way cycling lanes on Cannon.
